BC PEOPLE FIRST PARTICIPATES
AT THE 2017 INCLUSION BC CONFERENCE, by Michael McLellan
The Inclusion BC learning event was a 3 parter. First, there was the pre-conference with all day work shops on Education and Employment then the Disability Pride March and then the learning event. There was lots of learning, teaching, and sharing going on. Let me tell you about it.
BCPF was asked to do an opening presentation at the pre-conference Employment workshop about how I used my connections to get a job. I also facilitated a table at the world cafe during the day. The questions that were asked at the table really made people think about what people labeled with a disability go through when trying to find employment. Great questions like: What matters most to me about working together? What connections need to be made? and What questions do we need to ask of ourselves and of those we want to collaborate with? This year the Inclusion BC conference started off with a March; the first Canadian Disability Pride March and I can tell you I was proud. I was one of the grand marshals in the Pride march; our new Board Member Brayden, Vice President Dave and consultant Lorrie were also there. We were not the only people there, over 1000 people marched, that was awesome and so were the pancakes. This march was part of the Canada 150th birthday. Click to learn more about Disability Pride.
After the Disability Pride March, the conference started with Severn Cullis-Suzuki a key note speaker, yes David Suzuki’s daughter. There was a moving ceremony about Woodlands and the final settlement to those people whose lives that were so deeply affected by living in an institution. Peter Born sang ‘We will over come’ that affected the whole audience. Click HERE for the awesome video!
I was part of a group Esatta that presented on a Rights profile. People filled out their own profiles about their rights but also their responsibilities. PLAN did a really good presentation about RDSP, Trusts and Rep agreements… this information people need to know. Be sure to know what the RDSP is and if you qualify, click on the logo below to find out more.
